Project Management Module

Outcomes

1.     Be able to create and effective project proposal consisting of a project scope, work breakdown structure and schedule.

2.     Be able to evaluate and assess such a proposal.

Preparation

ð        The following free resource should be reviewed. As you read Chapter 1 please pay careful attention to the importance of deadlines and how budget constraints might not be directly $. The example in the presentation has an implied but real cost constraint. Your time is valuable and you cannot spend more than 168 hrs per week working on this course. Also note there is a specific outcome.

ð        Although the example project and the project you have been assigned is much smaller in scope than those described in Chapter 3, I believe reading Chapter 3 is important because it will help you understand how to apply Project Management techniques to larger projects.

ð        The emphasis of Project Scope and SMART Goals are key strengths of Chapter 3. Developing SMART Goals is key to the Work Breakdown Structure and Schedule.

ð        Chapter 4 focuses on both the Work Breakdown Structure and Schedule. The suggestion about the number of levels in a Work Breakdown Structure is one of the best. The Network Diagram is a great way to turn the WBS into a Schedule. As shown in the Presentation the development of a schedule of tasks is a key result of the Project Planning portion of Project Management. However as shown in Chapters 1-4 jumping directly into the schedule development is not usually the best idea.

ð        Chapters 5-7 focus on Project Execution and Completion, as you reads these chapters consider how important the Planning Process is in Project Management. How many challenges would be less severe? How many challenges could be avoided.
