Tip for Problem 2

Determine the power required for the first turning operation in problem 1. Assume that your feed rate is 1.5x10^-3 mm/rev, that the lathe is running at 600 rpm, and that the material has a specific energy of 6.0 J/mm³. To help you prepare the answer consider the following.

• Make sure that you identify the depth of the first cut in your answer to this problem. Simply referencing Problem 1 is not acceptable.
• How does one determine the required power? Which terms other than specific energy are relevant?
• Do the terms other than specific energy require other terms for example rpm?
• Explain your problem solving strategy fully and concisely.
• Consider determining the numerical value of all required terms step-by-step.
